Byredo Toile – a different way to wear fragrance

BYREDO Toile textile perfumeThere are several places a man should never spray a fragrance. Apart from one I’m far too polite to mention here, directly onto his clothing is one of them. The reason for this is that some fragrance ingredients and colourants can damage or stain fabric – especially delicate fabric. And yet, there are times we’ve all wanted to spray out clothes rather than our skin – perhaps because we wanted to freshen them up or because we didn’t want skin itself to be overpoweringly perfumed.

Cult fragrance brand Byredo have recognised this in their latest fragrance – the appropriately named Toile. A genderless ‘textile perfume’ it’s been designed to be safe to spray on clothes and imparts a clean, fresh, slightly metallic fragrance that’s faintly reminiscent of sun-dried sheets, hairspray and static electricity. It’s created in the best tradition of anti-perfumes like Comme de Garcon’s Odeur 53 and Odeur 71 and well worth checking out if you’re looking, not only for a fragrance that’s slightly ‘different’, but also a different way to wear fragrance too.

Byredo’s Toile Textile Perfume is available from Mr. Porter and byredo.com priced £42 for 75ml.

Mr Porter’s 2016 Summer Grooming Kit lands

MR PORTER SUMMER GROOMING KIT (1)Grooming Boxes (collections of skin care and hair care products compiled as kits) are, at best, a bit hit and miss. Many I have encountered are skimpy, over-priced and badly curated. These are criticisms it’s impossible to level at Mr Porter‘s grooming boxes, however, because they’re by far the most artfully edited boxes out there. Their brand new Summer Grooming Kit, for example, features well-known brands like Clinique For Men, Tom Ford and Lab Series alongside cult ones like Bumble & Bumble, Czech & Speake and Baxter Of California and lesser known luxury brands like Patricks, which you may not have heard about but should definitely become acquainted with. All in all the kit features 13 full and travel-sized products (there’s a Perricone MD Cold Plasma sample which isn’t in the pic because I used it straight away) and costs £75. If that seems like a hefty initial outlay, consider this: the Clinique, Lab Series and REN products alone are worth £97. If you fancy getting your hands on one, though, don’t spend too long thinking about it – they tend to sell out faster than tickets to see Adele.

Mr Porter’s Summer Grooming Kit is available now from mrporter.com

Missed out on the Mr Porter Grooming Kit?

mr porterGrooming Boxes – specially curated sets of grooming products that give a chance to sample brands at a discount price – are, at the best of times, somewhat hit and miss. Trust Mr Porter to come up with probably the best one that’s appeared though. It’s luxurious Grooming Kit features a raft of full-sized and sample-sized products including brands like Escentric Molecules, Penhaligon’s, REN, Perricone MD and some of my personal favorites like Czech & Speake and Malin + Goetz. Beautifully edited and costing £50 it’s also that rarest of things  –  a true bargain (the Escentric Molecules Body Wash and Bamford Grooming Department’s Exfoliating Face Wash alone cost more than that). Which may explain why the kit sold out within a week of its launch at the end of October. I am reliably informed, however, that new stock will be available next week so keep an eye out for it here!

Looking for the perfect pressie? How about Mr Porter’s new paperback?

MR PORTER PAPERBACKCurrently accompanying me to bed at night is this little number from online retail behemoth Mr Porter. The second paperback compendium of style and grooming tips, essential man skills, insider advice about where to eat, hang out and  – in typical Mr Porter style – how to pick the perfect desk lamp, it makes perfect bedtime reading.

What’s more everything is presented in an easily digestible format (the Bryan Ferry interview is just four dinky pages long but more insightful than some entire books on him I’ve read). Look out, too, for the article entitled Art-Deco Drives which is the nearest thing to car porn you’ll ever find.

The Mr Porter Paperback Volume Two is published by Thames & Hudson and is available from mrporter.com, priced £20.

It’s all in the edit: Mr Porter launches dedicated area for male grooming

Grooming at MRPORTER.COMIt was the worst kept secret in the industry: that Mr Porter was going to start selling grooming products alongside its fashion brands. And finally the day has come.

With Mr Porter, of course, it’s all in the edit and they’ve managed to bring together a range of brands that embrace both traditional, gentlemanly reliability and uber-cool modernity. Amongst the usual suspects (Baxter of California and Malin + Goetz  amongst them) are some of my personal favourites like Aesop, Czech & Speake (I’ve been wearing their No88 fragrance since the Eightes), Le Labo and Santa Maria Novella.

The latter is a truly inspired choice. A fantastic Italian brand that’s nearly 800 years old it’s been difficult to track down in the UK, and if you’ve ever been to their shop in Florence you’ll know how difficult it is not to blow a small fortune on it.

It doesn’t appear to be available to buy just yet (I’m told it’ll be online from November) but is the one to look out for – especially for the candles, shaving products and amazing soaps –  so make a note in your dairy.
