I’m often asked to recommend my favourite moisturisers and if you happen to be looking for one my recent piece for telegraph.co.uk will certainly help point you in the right direction, regardless of your skin type or the size of your wallet. I’m exceptionally lucky in my job as a grooming writer in that I get try out virtually every skincare product that hits the market. What this privilege provides me with is an excellent overview of what’s hot (and what’s not) and what’s worth spending your money on. And if there’s one thing I’ve learnt over the years it’s that, sometimes, it’s worth checking out lesser known premium skincare brands rather than just opting for the usual department store names. One such brand is FIT Skincare for Men.
Formulated and manufactured here in the UK (always a big bonus in my book) and offering “a workout for your skin” FIT offer a ten-piece, performance-driven grooming range that includes everything a man needs to keep his hair, face and body looking, as the name aptly suggests, ‘fit’.
The hero product for me is the FIT Moisturising Ultra Serum. A lightweight, rapidly-absorbed and non-greasy serum this high-tech skin saviour features a raft of natural active ingredients which penetrate the skin to deliver superior skincare.
Amino acids tone skin and stimulate collagen production; antioxidants offer protection from harmful free radicals and environmental damage; botanical extracts reduce irritation and minimise fine lines, whilst caffeine reduces puffiness. The serum also features Hyaluronic Acid – an ingredient often lauded by grooming writers like myself because of its ability to keep skin soft, supple and hydrated. Finally, FIT’s very own OXY-FIT-10 oxygen delivery system helps power skin cell regeneration – something that’s handy, whatever your age.
The result is the ultimate multi-functional skincare product for men – one that hydrates, repairs, protects and reduces irritation. Easily slotted into you existing grooming routine you simply apply sparingly to the face after cleansing, morning and night. I’ve been using it for three weeks now and must say my skin, which often suffers from random dry patches, feels great. What’s more, unlike some products, it only has the merest hint of fragrance (in this case a refreshing hint of ginger).
A couple of other products from the range worth checking out are the cleverly named FIT EYEDRATE+, an energizing and refreshing eye serum which tackles those unwanted signs of fatigue like puffiness and dark circles, and FIT’s Pec & Ab Sculpt which has received a mention in Shortlist’s prestigious Men’s Grooming Awards. With products as targeted and results-driven as these, I suspect that nod of recognition may not be the last.
FIT Moisturising Ultra Serum is available from fitkincare.co.uk priced £50 for 30ml. To check out the full range click here.

If you’re a fan of luxury skincare brand Creme de la Mer (or, for that matter, just a fan of great-looking skin) then you might want to check out their latest launch – The Treatment Lotion. Especially good for dry skin, it’s a light, quickly-absorbed and non-greasy lotion that you apply after cleaning and before moisturising. Designed to give skin both an energy and a moisture boost it may seem like just one more unnecessary step in your existing grooming regime but it’s actually one well worth doing. And with Autumn (and those moisture-robbing winds) upon us its launch couldn’t be better timed.
Creme de la Mer The Treatment Lotion is available from October. For more info go to cremedelamer.co.uk
If you’re wondering why I’ve been quiet for the last few weeks it’s because I’ve been on holiday in the US. But I’m back now (if heavily jet-lagged) and over the next few days I’ll have a few special travel-themed posts.
I have to confess, I’m not known for travelling light (my grooming essentials alone could fill a small suitcase and I’ll post about some of those in the next few days) but I’m remarkably economical with what I take onto planes. As you can see from the pic above I travelled exceptionally light this time, taking just two little lifesavers onto my Virgin Atlantic flight to Boston.
The first was a dinky 15ml Elemis Pro-Radiance Illuminating Flash Balm which is great for moisturising skin but which also gives it a bit of lift – useful when you look like you’ve been up all night (which I had been). I usually take their fantastic Time For Men S.O.S Survival Cream – which is super hydrating – but this sample sized Flash Balm seemed perfect the journey. I also popped a retaW Lip Balm in my liquids bag as my lips are always the first thing to feel the effects of dry cabin air.
Anyway, if you have any essentials you like to take on planes, let me know. Would love to hear what your must-haves are.
The Micro Pedi Man is essentially a mini-sander for your feet and is the perfect tool for getting your trotters ship shape for sandals. To be honest, I haven’t enjoyed using a grooming gadget this much since I first manscaped myself using the original Philips Bodygroom back in 2006. In fact, I’m worried I may be addicted to it (I’m eyeing it up lovingly as I type).
I don’t actually have the hugest amount of dry skin on my feet but what I do have has now vanished thanks to this nifty little summer essential. I swear to you, using is it just joyous! And the stuff that comes off! Oh!
Grooming Guru Essentials are the products I genuinely love and have used as part of my own routine.
Without doubt this year’s big grooming trend (apart from facial hair) is the rise of the multi-functional product. As belts tighten and spare time becomes increasingly scarce products that cover several bases are becoming increasingly popular and more relevant.
Already this year we’ve had Lab Series’ excellent PRO-LS All-In-One Face Treatment and next month sees the launch of Molton Brown’s 4-in-1 Sportwash. And here’s another worth checking out. Groomed’s Super 8 Skin Saviour Balm is a product designed to soothe razor burn, reduce fine lines and wrinkles, energise dull skin, moisturise, provide anti-oxidant protection, refine pores, combat blemishes and mattify skin.
In fairness, a couple of these features are built in to some products without them even flagging up the fact and any good moistuiser will help minimise wrinkles but it’s still a pretty good product and at £4 for 50ml, reasonably priced too. The texture’s great, it’s not overly-fragranced and its instant cooling effect also makes it a great morning-after-the-night-before refresher – something I discovered when I tried it for the first time this morning. Just a shame it can’t get rid of the hangover too…
Available from Asda.
Soothsayer that I am I remember reporting a couple of years ago that male skincare was moving inexorably towards multifunctionalism. And Lab Series‘ new PRO LS All-In-One Face Treatment is yet more proof that my crystal ball still works occasionally.
Essentially a four-in-one face treatment it can be used as an aftershave balm to sooth irritated skin but also as an all-over-the-face anti-ageing and mattifying moisturiser, reducing fine lines and wrinkles, hydrating skin and absorbing excess oil.
Not only is it the perfect introduction to Lab Series as a brand it’s ideal for travel – when space is at a premium – too. One day all male grooming products will be this simple.
Lab Series PRO LS ALL-IN-ONE FACE TREATMENT is available from March, priced £22 for 50ml. For more information see www.labseries.co.uk
