Isn’t it time your face got FIT?

fir skincare manI’m exceptionally lucky in my job as a grooming writer in that I get try out virtually every skincare product that hits the market. What this privilege provides me with is an excellent overview of what’s hot (and what’s not) and what’s worth spending your money on. And if there’s one thing I’ve learnt over the years it’s that, sometimes, it’s worth checking out lesser known premium skincare brands rather than just opting for the usual department store names. One such brand is FIT Skincare for Men.

Formulated and manufactured here in the UK (always a big bonus in my book) and offering “a workout for your skin” FIT offer a ten-piece, performance-driven grooming range that includes everything a man needs to keep his hair, face and body looking, as the name aptly suggests, ‘fit’.

FIT_30ml_Moisturiser_Bottle_SQUARE_72dpi_V1The hero product for me is the FIT Moisturising Ultra Serum. A lightweight, rapidly-absorbed and non-greasy serum this high-tech skin saviour features a raft of natural active ingredients which penetrate the skin to deliver superior skincare.

swatchAmino acids tone skin and stimulate collagen production; antioxidants offer protection from harmful free radicals and environmental damage; botanical extracts reduce irritation and minimise fine lines, whilst caffeine reduces puffiness. The serum also features Hyaluronic Acid – an ingredient often lauded by grooming writers like myself because of its ability to keep skin soft, supple and hydrated. Finally, FIT’s very own OXY-FIT-10 oxygen delivery system helps power skin cell regeneration – something that’s handy, whatever your age.

The result is the ultimate multi-functional skincare product for men – one that hydrates, repairs, protects and reduces irritation. Easily slotted into you existing grooming routine you simply apply sparingly to the face after cleansing, morning and night. I’ve been using it for three weeks now and must say my skin, which often suffers from random dry patches, feels great. What’s more, unlike some products, it only has the merest hint of fragrance (in this case a refreshing hint of ginger).

FIT SKINCARE SERUMA couple of other products from the range worth checking out are the cleverly named FIT EYEDRATE+, an energizing and refreshing eye serum which tackles those unwanted signs of fatigue like puffiness and dark circles, and FIT’s Pec & Ab Sculpt which has received a mention in Shortlist’s prestigious Men’s Grooming Awards. With products as targeted and results-driven as these, I suspect that nod of recognition  may not be the last.

FIT Moisturising Ultra Serum is available from fitkincare.co.uk priced £50 for 30ml. To check out the full range click here.

Grooming Guru Essentials: Shiseido Men Total Revitalizer Eye cream

Shiseido eye creamHaving been a little under the weather this past week I’ve also been looking decidedly below par. A little like Uncle Fester in fact. So it’s a blessed relief I have this new eye cream from Shiseido to hand. Lovely and light it’s quickly absorbed, leaves no shine on the skin and is great for tackling annoying ocular occurrences such as eye bags and dark circles. It also has a special “Damage Defense Complex” which features a raft of ingredients to reinforce the skin’s natural barrier and keep the skin around the eye firm and hydrated. Anyway, it’s certainly helped make me look half-human again and for that reason alone I can heartily recommend it.

Available now from House of Fraser.

Ask The Guru: Every time I use an eye cream my skin ends up red and puffy. How come?

EYESChances are, you’re using too much. Eye creams are great at combating puffiness, dark circles and fine lines but they’re potent things and the skin around your eyes is very fragile so smothering the area with too much eye cream can counteract its benefits.

Unfortunately, a lot of men tend to think that using more of a product leads to better results but eye creams, along with serums and scrubs are products where less is often more.

So to get the most out of your eye cream gently pat a tiny amount (no bigger than a small grain of rice) around the edge of each eye socket using the tip of your ring finger. This finger has the lightest touch so it’s perfect for applying eye products. Don’t rub the cream in as this can irritate the delicate skin around the eye.

Important date? Here are five products to help you attain grooming perfection!

Whether you’re planning something special for Valentine’s Day or hoping for a hot date at any other time, the little grooming details matter. Here are five products I rate that’ll have you ship-shape for dating success in no time. Alas, whilst  I can provide grooming advice, finding a willing partner is your part I’m afraid.

1. Wahl Tripple Head Trimmer.  Nothing lets a man down like ear and nose hair or errant eyebrows so deal with all three with this nifty battery-operated trimmer which has heads for all three (including an eyebrow comb guide that spares you painful plucking).

2. Yves Saint Laurent M7 Oud Absolu. My new favourite fragrance this slightly reworked-version of M7 is dense, woody and supremely sexy and though some fans of the original version complain it’s not as good, I think it’s better.  When I wear it I’m irresistible (in my mind anyway).

3. Philips Azur powertool iron. Let me be clear about this: I hate ironing. So much so that I’d rather sit and flick through a bumper issue of Hello! magazine dedicated to Kate Middleton (yes, that much). In fact, I’m famous for only ironing the bits of shirts that show. Mark my words, though, prospective partners notice details like badly ironed cuffs and collars. Marketed as the ‘man iron’ – presumably because it’s sleek and black and tough as nails –  this is the first first iron I’ve used that actually makes ironing a (sort of) pleasure. Looks the biz too doesn’t it?

4. Biotherm Homme high Recharge Eye Shot. If you’re on a date with someone chances are your eyes are going to be the focus of their attention. So the last thing you want is for the skin around them to look tired and puffy. This powerful anti-fatigue eye treatment, with its three rollerball delivery system, is the perfect antidote.

5. Baxter of California Hydro Salve. If you want to get kissed you at need lips that are kissable right? This balm, packed with skin-conditioning vitamins is the perfect way to keep your smackers soft and ensure some tonsil tennis.

Have fun y’all!

Clinique’s new Anti-Fatigue Cooling Eye Gel reviewed

You know what they say, first ain’t always best. And although rollerball eye products have been around for a while, Clinique’s new Anti-Fatigue Eye Gel is well worth checking out.

Formulated with soothing botanicals, skin-saving antioxidants and caffeine to constrict blood vessels in the skin and reduce ‘excess ocular baggage’ (ie eyebags), it’s the perfect morning after remedy. The metal rollerball helps too since anything cold will reduce puffiness. You can certainly feel it going to work as it tightens the skin around the eyes.

Personally, I’d have liked the finger-friendly indentations in the applicator to have been a little further away from the rollerball but this is a minor criticism of what is a great addition to your bathroom cabinet.

Available from Boots.com priced £20  for 15ml

Grooming Guru Essentials: Dermalogica Total Eye Care

If like me, your blighted by the kind of dark circles only Uncle Fester would envy, this technically- advanced eye treatment is an absolute godsend. I’ve been using it for years and whilst I do use other eye products, I always seem to come back to this one. Part of its appeal is that it does much more than your average eye cream. For starters it contains gentle alpha-hydroxy acids to smooth the skin around the eyes and it contains special light-reflecting particles which manage to fool people into thinking your skin is in better nick than it actually is (no mean feat in my case) and that your dark circles aren’t nearly so…dark. Indispensable.
