A little bit of fireside magic from Birch & Brook

fireside_1024x1024

Readers of this blog will know how much I like a scented candle. Probably my favourite candle of all time is Diptyque’s delightfully smoky Feu de Bois but I’ve had problems with the ones I’ve used recently in terms of sootiness and uneven burning so this one, Fireside, from British Brand Birch & Brook, has been a Godsend. Similar scent-wise to Feu de Bois it delivers a fantastically masculine, woodsy, smoky aroma, has a good burn time (40hrs) and is free of paraffin and other candle nasties. Cheaper than Diptyque too. Recommended.

Want to fragrance your pad? Then go hell for leather

Leather Candle_5060270293583If you’re a man, finding a scented candle that doesn’t make your pad smell like a boudoir can be a real challenge so here’s one that makes your search a cinch. Roja Dove’s Roja Parfums Leather Bougie is rich, warm and – as the name suggests – delightfully leathery. It’s also big on one of my favourite fragrance notes, birch tar – an ingredient that has a natural affinity with leather since it’s often used to make it waterproof. How does it smell? Well, imagine slipping into stiff new riding boots, straddling an unforgiving leather saddle and galloping off through a Scottish forest at full pelt and you’re kind of halfway to appreciating its rich, manly fabulousness*.

From Russia…with love

Readers of this blog will know I love a scented candle. So I was thrilled to attend the launch of three new premium candles by Jonathan Ward latest the other night. Wax Master Jonathan has a well-deserved reputation for creating candles that take you on a journey as much as they fragrance your environment and the ones making up The Russian Collection are no different.

Inspired by Russia’s colourful history each of the trio of candles – Kartushya (warm and spicy), The Gypsy (sensual and floral) and The Empress and Darya (spicy and woody) tells its own evocative story. The latter, for example, was inspired by the the caputure of serial killer Darya by Catherine The Great (now how’s that for inspiration for a scented candle?).

Of the three, my personal favourite is this last candle, which is a perfect choice for men since it’s loaded with earthy vetiver along with warm woody notes and has a  sexy, slightly leathery aroma. So if you’re looking for the perfect way to fragrance your pad, go buy! Or пойти и купить as I think they say in Russia.

Candles in the Russian collection are available in two sizes: large (8.5oz with a 45hr burn time) and medium (6.5oz with a 20-25hr burn time) and are made with organic soy and beeswax. The large candle costs £35 and the medium £25. To buy go to www.jonathanwardlondon.com

PS. Look out for a Q&A with Jonathan on here very soon!
